Speaker Tobin establishes a committee to investigate Fast and Furious.

Stating that Fast and Furious happened in Arizona, and Arizonans have a right to know the facts, Arizona's Speaker of the House Andy Tobin has established an Ad Hoc Committee on Operation Fast and Furious.

This committee will be chaired by Representative David Burnell Smith (a Republican from Scottsdale).

According to the Press Release sent out in advance, the purpose of the committee will be to investigate:

  • The factual background of the federal program known as "Fast and Furious"
  • The impact of "Fast and Furious" on the State of Arizona and its residents
  • Whether any specific Arizona laws were violated

This Committee will have subpoena authority, and will submit a report by March 20 to the Governor, the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House.

In attendance at the press conference were Speaker Andy Tobin, Representative Smith, Attorney General Tom Horne and Yavapai Sheriff Scott Mascher, who is also the President of the Arizona Sheriff's Association. In the background was a noisy protest both for and against SB 1070 and Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Here's the press conference, held on the lawn at the Capitol complex:
